SUMMARY:Robert Brenner’s The Economics of Global Turbulence
DESCRIPTION:The Economics of Global Turbulence: A Close Reading and Discussion\nConvened by Sam Salour\n\nRobert Brenner’s The Economics of Global Turbulence: The Advanced Capitalist Economies from Long Boom to Long Downturn\, 1945-2005 (1998\, rev. 2006) remains among the best accounts of the evolution of advanced capitalist economies since the Second World War. His analysis of the long downturn\, although strongly criticized by certain Marxists\, proved able to account not only for the great recession but also for the global economic stagnation ever since. Even bourgeois scholars of different persuasions – whether neoclassical\, neo-Keynesian\, post-Keynesian or Kaleckian – now acknowledge that the dynamism of the advanced capitalist economies has been slowing dynamism ever since the 1980s.\n\nWe are engaging in a close reading of the text with extensive discussion. We read 10 to 15 pages in each session and expect to finish the book in 6 months. We will follow up with a reading of Brenner’s The Boom and The Bubble and his article “What is Good for Goldman Sachs is Good for America\,” in which he extends his analysis to account for the Great Recession.\nRobert Brenner is professor emeritus of history and director of the Center for Social Theory and Comparative History at UCLA. His influential article\, “Agrarian Class Structure and Economic Development in Pre-Industrial Europe\,” imprinted his name on a central debate concerning the origins of capitalism – the Brenner Debate. \nNo prerequisites nor any preparation is required. SUMMARY:Platform Socialism: How to Reclaim Our Digital Future from Big Tech
DESCRIPTION:With author James Muldoon\nA bold new manifesto for digital technology after capitalism\n“A punchy analysis of the platform economy that offers more than a critique of big tech’s vision of our collective future. Muldoon sketches  the contours of a democratic socialist alternative.”\n— Aaron Benanav\, Researcher at Humboldt University of Berlin and author of Automation and the Future of Work \n“Encourages us to open our minds fully to the possibility of an alternative future\, in which technology is put to work for the many\, not the few’\n— Lizzie O’Shea\, lawyer and author of Future Histories \nWhoever controls the platforms\, controls the future. Platform Socialism sets out an alternative vision and concrete proposals for a digital economy that expands our freedom. Powerful tech companies now own the digital infrastructure of twenty-first century social life. Masquerading as global community builders\, these companies have developed sophisticated new techniques for extracting wealth from their users. \nJames Muldoon shows how grassroots communities and transnational social movements can take back control from Big Tech. He reframes the technology debate and proposes a host of new ideas from the local to the international for how we can reclaim the emancipatory possibilities of digital platforms. Drawing on sources from forgotten histories to contemporary prototypes\, he proposes an alternative system and charts a roadmap for how we can get there. \n JAMES MULDOON is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Exeter\, Head of Digital Research at Autonomy\, and YouTube philosopher at Political Philosophy. He also works directly with digital businesses transitioning to fair work practices. His writing has appeared in the Guardian\, Time magazine and the Huffington Post.  \nFor a discount on James’ book: plutobooks.com\nDiscount code: MEP\nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Global Political Struggles of the Working Class
DESCRIPTION:The Double Consciousness of Capital with author DAVID HARVEY\nSocial Sources of Political Polarization in Russia with authors ILYA MATVEEV and OLEG ZHURAVLEV\nThe Far Right\, Corporate Power\, and Social Struggles in Brazil with authors VIRGINIA FONTES\, ANA GARCIA and REJANE HOEVELER\nIn “The Double Consciousness of Capital”. DAVID HARVEY turns to Marx’s Grundrisse and to W.E.B.Du Bois’ idea of  double consciousness\, to locate a tension in anti-capitalist politics between the possibilities found in the creative destruction and technological revolutions of capitalism and the alienation and loss of human potentiality which is a result of the same process. The path to socialism requires navigating the contradictions of this double consciousness. \nIn “Social Sources of Political Polarization in Russia”. ILYA MATVEEV and OLEG ZHURAVLEV offer a compelling account of rising urban-rural and core-periphery polarization in Russia under the authoritarian nationalism of Vladimir Putin\, which until recently was able to rely on the apathetic indifference of the people and general appeals to social stability to maintain unchallenged power. \nIn “The Far Right\, Corporate Power\, and Social Struggles in Brazil”. VIRGINA FONTES\, ANA GARCIA\, and REJANE HOEVELER contrast the fictitious polarization in Brazil between electoral oppositions that quarrel over cultural issues without challenging the hegemony of neoliberal capitalism and the real polarization resulting from a combative working class that is developing\, as Gramsci says\, a spirit of cleavage\, determined to pursue its class interests. \nDAVID HARVEY is Distinguished Professor of anthropology and geography at the City University of New York. ILYA MATVEEV teaches politics at the Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration\, St. Petersburg; OLEG ZHURAVLEV is a researcher at the Public Sociology Laboratory\, Center for Independent Social Research\, St. Petersburg. VIRGINIA FONTES is professor of history at Fluminense Federal University\, Rio de Janeiro State\, and a teacher at the Florestan Fernandes National School of the Landless Workers Movement; ANA GARCIA is assistant professor at the International Relations Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University and the graduate program in Social Sciences at the Federal Rural University\, both in Rio de Janeiro; REJANE HOEVELER is a lecturer in the School of Social Service at Fluminense Federal University. \nSocialist Register #58 is available for $28 including shipping via US Media Mail (this offer is only good for the US and Puerto Rico). In Canada Socialist Register is available from Fernwood Books and in Europe from The Merlin Press. \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you are able to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Rubbish Belongs to the Poor
DESCRIPTION:Hygienic Enclosure and the Waste Commons\nPresentation and discussion with author Patrick O’Hare\nRubbish. Waste. Trash. Whatever term you choose to describe the things we throw away\, the connotations are the same; of something dirty\, useless and incontrovertibly ‘bad’. But does such a dismissive rendering mask a more nuanced reality? \nIn Rubbish Belongs to the Poor\, Patrick O’Hare journeys to the heart of Uruguay’s waste disposal system in order to reconceptualize rubbish as a 21st century commons\, at risk of enclosure. On a giant landfill site outside the capital Montevideo we meet the book’s central protagonists\, the ‘classifiers’: waste-pickers who recover and recycle materials in and around its fenced but porous perimeter. Here the struggle of classifiers against the enclosure of the landfill\, justified on the grounds of hygiene\, is brought into dialogue with other historical and contemporary enclosures – from urban privatizations to rural evictions — to shed light on the nature of contemporary forms of capitalist dispossession. \nSupplementing this rich ethnography with the author’s own insights from dumpster diving in the UK\, the book analyzes capitalism’s relations with its material surpluses and what these tell us about its expansionary logics\, limits and liminal spaces. Rubbish Belongs to the Poor ultimately proposes a fundamental rethinking of the links between waste\, capitalism and dignified work. \nPatrick O’Hare is a social anthropologist and activist. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge and is currently a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Senior Researcher at the University of St Andrews. \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Insurrecto with author Gina Apostol in conversation with Patricia McManus
DESCRIPTION:“Of course\, as opposed to the colonizer\, the world of the colonized is visibly and thus irreparably multiple – because included in the world of the colonized is the world of the colonizer.”. —How Do We Know the Things That Make Us?\, An essay from Gina Apostol \nGina Apostol’s Insurrecto is a harrowing depiction of the nearly 125-year history of U.S. intervention\, occupation\, and domination in the Philippines. Through a compelling historical\, cultural\, post-modernist journey\, the author recounts the U.S. hold on the Philippines\, as told by Magsalin\, a Filipina translator and screenwriter\, and Chiara\, an American filmmaker. The U.S.-made merry-go-round of dictators has circled around Manila and the 7\,000-plus islands of the Philippines since the 1901 massacre at Balangiga—the slaughter of more than 2\,500 Filipinos in retaliation for 40 American soldiers killed in a raid by local national liberationists. When President Theodore Roosevelt issued a command to pacify the Philippines after the raid was reported to him\, the local U.S. general issued the following command:  “I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn; the more you kill and burn\, the better it will please me… The interior of Samar must be made a howling wilderness.” From that point on he was known as “Howling Wilderness” Smith. Insurrecto spans the decades from the moment of the massacre to the current Duterte regime\, with much between—a fractured story of torture and misrepresentation over many years of U.S. and western hegemony. \nPlease join Gina Apostol and  Patricia McManus for an evening of discovery as they discuss the inspiration\, writing\, and more of this astonishing novel (published by Soho Press). \nGINA APOSTOL’s third book\, Gun Dealers’ Daughter\, won the2013 PEN/Open Book Award and was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize. Her first two novels\, Bibliolepsy and The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata\, both won the Juan Laya Prize for the Novel (Philippine National Book Award). She was a fellow at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria\, Italy\, among other fellowships. Her essays and stories have appeared in The New York Times\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Foreign Policy\, Gettysburg Review\, Massachusetts Review\, and others. She lives in New York City and western Massachusetts and grew up in Tacloban\, Philippines. She teaches at the Fieldston School in New York City. \nPATRICIA McMANUS is a Senior Lecturer\, School of Humanities at University of Brighton. She is the founder of the Dystopia Project. Her research interests are the novel—in particular the problems involved in understanding genre as a productive force in literary history—and Marxism as a methodology for utopianism.

SUMMARY:The Necessity of Social Control by István Mészáros
DESCRIPTION:Reading and discussion with the Capital Studies Group\nSix More Sessions (recordings of earlier sessions available) \n“We are living in a time of unprecedented historical crisis\, which affects all forms of the capital system\, not just capitalism. It is easy to understand\, then\, that the only thing that could produce a viable solution to the contradictions that we have to face would be a radical socialist alternative to capital’s mode of social metabolic control.”   —István Mészáros \nDuring these next eight sessions we will do an ongoing close reading of Mészáros’ The Necessity of Social Control (Monthly Review Press). SUMMARY:Late Capitalist Fascism
DESCRIPTION:What if fascism can no longer be confined to political parties or ultra nationalist politicians but has become something much more diffuse that is spread across our societies as cultural expressions and psychological states? This is the thesis developed by Mikkel Bolt Rasmussen\, who argues that late capitalism has produced hollowed-out and exchangeable subjectivities that provide a breeding ground for a new kind of diffuse\, banal fascism. The overt and concentrated fascism of the new fascist parties thrives on the diffuse fascism present in social media and everyday life\, where the fear of being left behind and losing out has fuelled resentment towards foreigners and others who are perceived as threats to a national community under siege. Only by confronting both the overt fascism of parties and politicians and the diffuse fascism of everyday life will we be able to combat fascism effectively and prevent the slide into barbarism. \nMIKKEL BOLT RASMUSSEN is an art historian\, cultural critic and professor in Political Aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen. He has written books on the Situationist International\, politicized contemporary art and the revolutionary tradition. Previous books include Trump’s Counter-Revolution (Zero Books\, 2018) and After the Great Refusal (Zero Books\, 2018). \nPictured are: Estonian fascist Kaalep and French fascist LePen smiling together as they mutually display the fascist sign for white supremacy. LePen later asked Kaalep to take the image off his Facebook photo stream. More photos include a “White Way” protest in Plauen\, Germany\, a large fascist gathering in Poland\, the neo-Nazi Kotleba in Slovenia\, along with English fascists in the heart of London. \nOrder Mikkel’s book here: https://www.politybooks.com/bookdetail?book_slug=late-capitalist-fascism–9781509547432. \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you are able to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:50 Years of Anti-Imperialist Writing: Galeano\, Rodney\, and Ghosh
DESCRIPTION:Convened with Fred Murphy\, Gerardo Rénique and Gunnett Kaaf\nA reading group to celebrate and reflect on two classic works of anti-imperialist writing first published fifty years ago but with an ongoing worldwide impact: Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America (1971) and Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972). SUMMARY:A People’s History of Detroit
DESCRIPTION:with authors Mark Jay and Philip Conklin\n \nRecent bouts of gentrification and investment in Detroit have led some to call it the greatest turnaround story in American history. Meanwhile\, activists point to the city’s cuts to public services\, water shutoffs\, mass foreclosures\, and violent police raids. In A People’s History of Detroit\, Mark Jay and Philip Conklin use a class framework to tell a sweeping story of Detroit from 1913 to the present\, embedding Motown’s history in a global economic context. Attending to the struggle between corporate elites and radical working-class organizations\, Jay and Conklin outline the complex sociopolitical dynamics underlying major events in Detroit’s past\, from the rise of Fordism and the formation of labor unions\, to deindustrialization and the city’s recent bankruptcy. They demonstrate that Detroit’s history is not a tale of two cities—one of wealth and development and another racked by poverty and racial violence; rather it is the story of a single Detroit that operates according to capitalism’s mandates. \n“Jay and Conklin work backward before working forward. The authors first offer a people’s history of Detroit’s present\, subverting chronology to read the resurgence narrative of Detroit against the grain and reveal the erasure of Black Detroit via the myth of Detroit’s ‘Golden Age’ in the ’30s\, ’40s\, and ’50s. This allows them\, and therefore us\, to understand the systemic problems facing contemporary Detroit first\, and then uncover their prehistory second\, instead of the other way around.” — Hannah Zeavin\, Los Angeles Review of Books \n\nhttps://lareviewofbooks.org/contributor/hannah-zeavin/ \n\n\n“Equal parts an urban history of a single city and a sweeping theory of capitalism. . . . Through a detailed exposition of one city’s past\,A People’s History of Detroitimagines what a people’s future could look like in Detroit—and in other cities.” — David Helps\, Public Books \n\nMark Jay received his PhD in sociology from the University of California\, Santa Barbara.\nPhilip Conklin is a PhD student in the History of Consciousness at the University of California\, Santa Cruz.\nThey are coeditors of the literary and political magazine The Periphery. \n  \n  \nBOOKS AVAILABLE\nDUKE UNIVERSITY PRESS\ndukeupress.edu\n320 PAGES / 17 ILLUSTRATIONS\norder the book with this discount code: E20HSTRY \n

SUMMARY:A Guide to The Communist Manifesto with Phil Gasper
DESCRIPTION:The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels \nA presentation with Phil Gasper \n“…All this attention to Marx’s ideas is certainly welcome. But – and of course there is a ‘but’ – with few exceptions\, recent commentators have restricted their praise of the Manifesto to what it says about the nature and workings of the capitalist system. Yet Marx and Engels did not write the Manifesto as a piece of abstract economic analysis. It was intended as a revolutionary call to action – an explanation not only of what is wrong with society\, but how it can be transformed to create “an association\, in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all” (Pt. II\, ¶ 74). Central to this strategy for change is their claim that in the modern working class – the proletariat – capitalism has produced “its own gravediggers” (Pt. I\, ¶ 53). That is\, that capitalism itself has created the instrument of its abolition – an oppressed class with both the capacity and the interest to fight for the overthrow of the existing system\, the emancipation of all humanity\, and which\, unlike previous oppressed classes\, Twas capable of democratic self-rule…. The claim that the proletariat is a revolutionary class is the heart and soul of  The Communist Manifesto.”      —Phil Gasper\, International Socialist Review\, Issue 5 \nHere\, at last\, is an authoritative introduction to history’s most important political document\, with the full text of The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels. This beautifully organized and presented edition of The Communist Manifestois fully annotated\, with clear historical references and explication\, additional related texts\, and a glossary that will bring the text to life for students\, as well as the general reader. Since it was first written in 1848\, the Manifesto has been translated into more languages than any other modern text. It has been banned\, censored\, burned\, and declared “dead.” But year after year\, the text only grows more influential\, remaining required reading in courses on philosophy\, politics\, economics\, and history. \nPHIL GASPER is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Notre Dame de Namur University and the editor of The Communist Manifesto: A Road Map to History’s Most Important Political Document (Haymarket\, 2005) and Imperialism and War: Classic Writings by V.I. Lenin and Nikolai Bukarin (Haymarket\, 2017). He is a co-editor of the journal New Politics and a member of DSA and of the Tempest Collective. He lives in Madison\, Wisconsin. \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Brecht’s Communist Manifesto Today!
DESCRIPTION:Poetry\, Utopia\, Doctrine\n \nDarko Suvin with Pratyush Chandra\, Bill Henning\, Javeed Malik & Neeraj Malick\, and Christopher Winks\n“Poetry and communism: forms for emancipatory egalitarian longing. As vectors of desire\, they intertwine frustration and hope\, utopia and organization\, bread and roses. They call us to attend to the past\, not just to survive\, but to establish again the revolutionary horizon we need to live. Communism and poetry: Darko Suvin shows us how they are the same.”     —Jodi Dean\, author of Comrade: An Essay on Political Belonging \nA POEM • WHAT EXISTENTIAL ANTI-UTOPIA MEANS FOR US • BERTOLT BRECHT: (THE MANIFESTO) •  COMMENTS ON BRECHT’S MANIFESTO •  WHAT IS TO BE DONE? \nIn place of the old bourgeois society\, with its classes and class antagonisms\, we shall have an association\, in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.” —1848 Communist Manifesto\, Marx and Engels.\nCome join in a celebration and reclamation of the challenge Marx and Engels gave humanity in the original 1848 Communist Manifesto\, reclaimed and rewritten anew in poetry by Bertolt Brecht in the 20th century. Thanks to Darko Suvin\, poet and revolutionary intellectual\, Brecht’s unpublished work has been translated into English and is here\, ready to be appropriated by us of the 21st century. The Marxist Education Project is proud to present a reading and discussion of Brecht’s work and its meaning for us at a time when all of humanity\, our earth\, and all life as we know it is threatened by the moribund laws of self-seeking capitalist private property. Brecht premises his poem on the practical reality\, only fully in place after WWII\, of a globalized capitalized world. Marx understood that capitalist relations would globalize our societies and earth and saw this taking place\, but during his lifetime this had not yet been fully achieved. Now\, having occupied our earth\, today\, the Bezos and company are exploring the possibilities of extending their private interests into our universe all for their personal aggrandizement and under the dictates of money making more money\, accumulation for the sake of accumulation. Our guest speakers and discussants will explore the relations of poetry\, the meaning of utopia and anti-utopia\, and doctrine as we re-envision the emancipatory project and the necessity of self-consciously identifying the difficult tasks of transitioning specific to our particular country’s development while always in relation to and for the mutual development of each and all. Interestingly\, Brecht closes his Manifesto replying to Marx and Engels closing line in their Manifesto\, “The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win\,” by answering\, “How may the workers break their own class chains? Only by breaking everybody’s chains.” Marx once said that there are historical moments when the working class must gain class-consciousness and become historical subjects. We are at just such a historical moment. \nAre we up to the task? \n  \n  \nThis event is sliding scale: $23 for those who can afford front row orchestra seating / $3 General Admission a / $0 General Admission b \nWith registration a link for the event will be provided in time for attending this event.

SUMMARY:Grundrisse: The Chapter on Money (The first two notebooks)
DESCRIPTION:“Forces of production and social relations – two different sides of the development of the social individual – appear to capital as mere means\, and are merely means for it to produce on its limited foundation. In fact\, however\, they are the material conditions to blow this foundation sky-high…” —Karl Marx\, The Grundrisse \nPerhaps the most curious and least understood aspect of Marx’s work is his method of analysis. Marx viewed all his economic laws as tendencies and it is hard to deny that those tendencies are becoming more and more the realities of today’s capitalism. However\, to understand our society we need to do more than reading and accepting his concepts\, we must critically analyze them and look for the way of thinking that produced them. It is with this goal in my mind that we should embark on a journey through the long and complex sentences of the Grundrisse. This work is perhaps the best representation of the process of thinking that found its culmination in Capital and we will be engaging with it during our study. Without a doubt\, this will be a long and arduous process but we should always keep in mind that “there is no royal road to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits. Continuing on November 6\,  we will read from “The Chapter on Money” utilizing the Penguin edition of Marx’s Grundrisse. Recordings of prior sessions are available to all who would like to review. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Warehouse: Workers and Robots at Amazon with Alessandro Delfanti
DESCRIPTION:“Delfanti has done here what more critics of Amazon should — listen carefully to the people whose work makes the corporation function. Those of us fighting for a better future than Amazon’s dystopia have much to learn from this book”.  — Dania Rajendra\, Inaugural Director\, Athena Coalition \n‘Work hard\, have fun\, make history’ proclaims the slogan on the walls of Amazon’s warehouses. This cheerful message hides a reality of digital surveillance\, aggressive anti-union tactics and disciplinary layoffs. Reminiscent of the tumult of early industrial capitalism\, the hundreds of thousands of workers who help Amazon fulfil consumers’ desire are part of an experiment in changing the way we all work. \nIn this book\, Alessandro Delfanti takes readers inside Amazon’s warehouses to show how technological advancements and managerial techniques subdue the workers rather than empower them\, as seen in the sensors that track workers’ every movement around the floor and algorithmic systems that re-route orders to circumvent worker sabotage. He looks at new technologies including robotic arms trained by humans and augmented reality goggles\, showing that their aim is to standardize\, measure and discipline human work rather than replace it. \nDespite its innovation\, Amazon will always need living labor’s flexibility and low cost. And as the warehouse is increasingly automated\, worker discontent increases. Striking under the banner “we are not robots”\, employees have shown that they are acutely aware of such contradictions. The only question remains: how long will it be until Amazon’s empire collapses? \nALESSANDRO DELFANTI teaches Digital Media at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Biohackers: The Politics of Open Science (Pluto\, 2013). \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Value\, Fictitious Capital and Finance. The Timelessness of Karl Marx’s Capital with John Milios
DESCRIPTION:Karl Marx’s monetary value theory constitutes a radical break from the David Ricardo’s classical notion of value; it conceives value not as a “quantity” of labor contained in the commodity but as a social relation expressing the immanent regularities of the capitalist mode of production. Starting from his value-form analysis in Part One of Volume 1 of Capital\, Marx develops the concept of “fictitious capital” in Volume 3\, which depicts the role of interest-bearing capital and the financial sphere. Marx’s analysis allows for an understanding of contemporary capitalism\, financialization and crisis: financialization cannot be isolated from “real” economy; it should be conceived as a “technology” of exercising capitalist power and hegemony over the working classes and the society as a whole. Marx’s analysis provides the terms to rethink the contemporary neoliberal form of capitalism and its crisis as expressions of the contradictions inherent in the organization of capitalist power. \nJOHN MILIOS is Professor of Political Economy and the History of Economic Thought at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)\, Greece. He has authored more than two hundred papers published or forthcoming in refereed journals (in Greek\, English\, German\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, Italian\, Chinese and Turkish) including the Cambridge Journal of Economics\, History of Political Economy\, History of Economics Review\, Review of Political Economy\, European Journal of the History of Economic Thought\, The American Journal of Economics and Sociology\, Science & Society\, Rethinking Marxism\, Review of Radical Political Economics\, and has participated as invited speaker in numerous international conferences. He has also authored or co-authored some eighteen scholarly books. His most recent books in English are A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and Its Crisis: Demystifying Finance (Routledge 2013\, Paperback Edition 2014\, co-authored with D. P. Sotiropoulos and S. Lapatsioras) and The Origins of Capitalism as a Social System: The Prevalence of an Aleatory Encounter (Routledge 2018). He is director of the quarterly journal of economic theory Thesseis (published since 1982 in Greek) and serves on the editorial boards of four scholarly journals. \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:First They Took Rome with author David Broder
DESCRIPTION:How the Populist Right Conquered Italy\n“David Broder has produced an excellent account of what has made modern Italy different but also similar to other Western European states. It begins back in the early 1990s when Italy was once more a pioneer\, in that it was the first Western democracy where an established and stable two-party system collapsed suddenly\, opening the way for a series of new political forces\, labelled populist\, to emerge spectacularly and suddenly.”    — Chris Bambery\, Counterfire \n Many commentators blame Italy’s malaise on cultural ills—pointing to the corruption of public life or a supposedly endemic backwardness. In this reading\, Italy has failed to converge with the neoliberal reforms mounted by other European countries\, leaving it to trail behind the rest of the world. \nFirst They Took Rome offers a different perspective: Italy isn’t failing to keep up with its international peers but farther along the same path of decline they are following. In the 1980s\, Italy boasted the West’s strongest Communist Party; today\, social solidarity is collapsing\, working people feel ever more atomized\, and democratic institutions grow increasingly hollow. \nStudying the rise of forces like Matteo Salvini’s Lega\, this book shows how the populist right drew on a deep well of social despair\, ignored by the liberal center. Italy’s recent history is a warning from the future—the story of a collapse of public life that risks spreading across the West. \nDAVID BRODER is a Rome-based writer and translator. He is the European editor for Jacobin and regularly writes with a focus on Italy\, including in the journal Internazionale. \nVerso has provided the following code (good through November\, 2021) for 50% off of First They Took Rome.

SUMMARY:Capital\, Volume II: The Process of Circulation of Capital
DESCRIPTION:with Mary Boger\nVolume I of Capital is just the beginning of unraveling the underlying laws of capitalist development. In Volume I Marx demystifies “the commodity” by identifying the real sources of the production of wealth\, namely\, the human subject through our labor and nature. Capital subsumes these as commodities which are consumed within the process of production. After solving the form that the production of wealth takes within a society where generalized commodity production prevails under the domination of capital\, Marx takes on the next big question. How the hell can reproduction of society as a whole take place when there is no conscious social planning that ensures that all needs are met and in the necessary proportions such that a continuous reproduction of the conditions of life can take place and reproduce the capitalist relations of production? In Volume II\, The Process of Circulation of Capital\, we discover the solution to this problem while new internal contradictions and instabilities at a societal level inherent to this mode of production are explained. The ground is then laid in combining the laws of motion peculiar to capitalism uncovered in the first two Volumes—The Process of Capitalist Production and The Process of the Circulation of Capital—to the analysis of the third Volume\, The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole. \n \nWe will begin our study of Volume II study by situating this volume in relation to the historical process of development of capitalist society which is premised on its specific social form of societal re-production\, the production of capital. To do so we will study the closing sections of the Penguin edition of Volume I\, specifically\, Part VIII: “So-called Primitive Accumulation” and the “Appendix: Results of the Immediate Process of Production”. \nJoin us as we journey through this movement from the imaginary concrete to the abstract concrete to the real concrete. Come and challenge your way of thinking and understanding the world as it appears to you and begin to identify some of what needs to be overcome and done to bring about a better world. \nMARY BOGER\, an ethnographic researcher\, has been teaching Capital since the first School for Marxist Education opened in 1975. Her major concerns are centrality of labor\, shifts in the global working class\, advancing international solidarity that can challenge the prerogatives of globalized capital and begin to shift our resources and activities towards remediation of nature and reclamation of our human species capacities. Mary has an MA in Economics\, PhD in Sociology (A Ghetto State of Ghettos: Palestinians under Israeli Citizenship). \nAll events are sliding scale—choose the level at which you choose to contribute to The Marxist Education Project. SUMMARY:Diary of a Digital Plague Year with Dennis Broe
DESCRIPTION:Diary of a Digital Plague Year: Corona Culture\, Serial TV and The Rise of The Streaming Services with author Dennis Broe \nDENNIS BROE\, author of Birth of the Binge: Serial TV and The End of Leisure\, will be talking about his new book Diary of a Digital Plague Year: Corona Culture\, Serial TV and The Rise of The Streaming Services. The book offers a blow-by-blow account of the ongoing confinement\, charting the changes in our lives exacerbated by the coronavirus. Corona culture is a digital culture extraordinaire for some\, while for others it has increased panic and terror about being at work. \nThe privileged site for this exploration is serial TV and its new mode of delivery\, the increased power of the streaming services as they attempt to dominate and even throttle global media production in a neoliberal\, privatized attack on publicly financed film and television. The book charts this rise in short bursts that in toto illuminate these rapidly evolving changes in all our lives\, as Adorno’s Minima Moralia meets TV Guide. \n The talk will touch on the year’s highs and lows including “John Brown’s Maid\,” on the travesty that was The Good Lord Bird; “Coming Undone: The Limits of MeToo” and Nicole Kidman’s power walks in The Undoing; and “Battling ’50s Apartheid One Monster at aTime” in the majestic Lovecraft Country. The year is also recounted in essays on film\, art\, books and Euro- and American Cultural Politics\, all the while asking how to turn this new phase of Digital Disaster Capitalism into a more liberatory (Virtual) Road Ahead. \nHere’s what the critics are saying: \n“With his latest masterwork\, Dennis Broe confirms what some of us already knew: when it comes to parsing and interrogating popular culture\, he has no peer.” —Gerald Horne\, author\, Paul Robeson:  The Artist as Revolutionary \n“Broe’s mastery of history\, economics\, and media let him provide details and insights that few other writers can match. These short\, readable essays offer convincing explanations of the moment in which we live.” —Julia Lesage\, Co-founder and editor of Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media \n“Dennis Broe is one of the most acute critics working today. He has an astounding capacity to reach beyond a specific medium to give us wide-ranging yet deep social\, cultural\, and economic contexts. A triumph” —Toby Miller\, author of A Covid Charter\, a Better World \n “Broe’s blisteringly inciteful commentary isn’t just important\, it’s brave.” —From the Foreward by Redacted Tonight’s Lee Camp \nDENNIS BROE is the author of Birth of the Binge: Serial TV and The End of Leisure and Maverick or How The West Was Lost. His television criticism can be found at Bro on The Global Television Beat. SUMMARY:Urban Displacements and Contemporary Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Governing Surplus and Survival in Global Capitalism\nwith author Susanne Soederberg\n \nIn the 1870s\, Friedrich Engels published a series of articles on “The Housing Question\,” wherein he argued that decent\, secure housing for the working class is incompatible with the commodity nature of urban property and human labor power in the capitalist system\, as the movements of capital inevitably will undermine all piecemeal reforms. Soederberg pushes beyond dominant debates by treating low-rent housing as a unique commodity that provides a necessary place for the societal reproduction of labor power while being integrated into the global dynamics of capitalism. She argues that historical and geographical configurations of monetized governance\, including landlords\, employers and inter-scalar state practices\, have served to reproduce urban displacements and obfuscate their gendered\, class and racialized underpinnings. The outcome is the everyday facilitation and normalization of urban poverty and social marginalization on one side\, and capital accumulation on the other.Berlin\, Dublin\, and Vienna are case studies. \n“What is the role of racialised barriers to housing in changing landscapes of accumulation? How does renting become a central process in disuniting working people? This insightful work guides the reader through this most urgent of debates.” —Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya\, Centre for Migration\, Refugees and Belonging\, University of East London \nSusanne Soederberg\, Professor of Political Economy in Global Development Studies at Queen’s University\, Ontario\, Canada\, is also the author of Debtfare States and the Poverty Industry (2014) and Corporate Power and Ownership in Contemporary Capitalism (2010).
