SUMMARY:'Beneath the Wage' with Annie McClanahan
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with author Annie McClanahan on Beneath the Wage: Tips\, Tasks\, and Gigs in the Age of Service Work (Zone Books\, 2026). Today\, 80 percent of U.S. workers do service work\, from delivering takeout to mopping floors to teaching. Do these jobs have anything in common? Who is doing this work? And what kind of labor politics does it generate? \n\nAlthough service work has often been treated as a footnote to modern capitalism\, this talk uses service work to challenge conventional assumptions about how work is waged\, regulated\, managed\, and automated. It explores three paradigmatic types of contemporary service labor—superexploited tipwork\, deskilled clerical microwork\, and informalized gigwork—and argues that work done “beneath the wage” depends on racialized and gendered forms of economic domination and is often excluded from labor organizing and regulation. Yet service work has also begun to generate a new politics of solidarity\, one that rejects the compromises of industrial unionism and attends instead to the problem of reproduction in a low-wage economy. \nAnnie McClanahan is Professor of English at the University of California–Irvine. She directs the UC Marxist Institute for Research\, is Faculty Co-Director for UCI-LIFTED\, which offers a bachelors degree to incarcerated students\, and is the Vice President for the Council of UC Faculty Associations. She is also the author of Dead Pledges: Debt\, Crisis\, and 21st Century Culture (Stanford University Press\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Highlights of Capital Volume III: The Automatic Fetish
DESCRIPTION:Volume III of Marx’s Capital – The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole – integrates and completes Marx’s analysis\, enabling us to understand and make sense of how the phenomena we see occurring on the surface of society are related to the underlying system of capitalism. It is essential to understanding the current moment of late capitalist/imperialist development\, in which we see the rise of rentier and finance capital and the commodification of debt; continuously rising prices that bring still more poverty and starvation; new technologies turned into means of extracting rents; the privatization of public spaces\, properties and institutions; and the list goes on. \nIn this series of eight to ten weekly sessions\, we will be guided through the key concepts in Capital III using Beverley Best’s highly praised companion volume\, The Automatic Fetish: The Law of Value in Marx’s Capital. View syllabus \nFred Murphy facilitates this group. Since 2015 Fred has led numerous MEP study groups on political economy\, ecosocialism\, science and technology\, the history of capitalism\, and Latin American politics. He studied and taught historical sociology at the New School for Social Research and reported from Latin America for several socialist publications.

SUMMARY:Topics in Political Strategy: End Times Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Weekly on Tuesdays\, 7-9 pm ET\n \nThe governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous\, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them.—Naomi Klein \nAs we sink deeper into the fall election season\, the Topics in Political Strategy reading group will continue our mix of currently-published substantive analytical pieces and a monthly book-length treatment of important topics of political theory. This month\, we read Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor’s just published End Times Fascism\, a compelling look at three separate yet overlapping political currents of the modern right and how to stop them. \nWe study together to understand the wave of reaction which once again has washed over politics\, its reflection in both long historical currents and fast-changing global trends\, and ways to think strategically about new directions for the socialist left.
